Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin covering the end of the penis. This is an optional procedure, so it’s completely up to parents whether they would like to have this performed.
Circumcision has a number of health benefits including:
Lower risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Lower risk of foreskin infections
Lower risk of sexually transmitted infections
Prevents phimosis (inability to pull the foreskin back)
Makes it easier to accomplish good penile hygiene
This procedure is safest when performed during the newborn period. Thereafter, the risk of complications rises. At West Side Pediatrics, this procedure is made available to established patients. The procedure is done using a local anesthetic, so your baby remains comfortable throughout.
Please bring the following supplies on the day of your infant’s circumcision:
4 diapers
A pack of baby wipes
Pacifier
Receiving blanket
Baby bottle of formula or breastmilk
Tub of Vaseline
Aftercare instructions will be provided on the day of the circumcision and a follow-up visit will also be scheduled.
